I have talked about affiliate marketing from time to time, its advantages most of all. The second basic principle is how search engines work – there are two types - crawler-based search engines and human-powered directories. These two types of search engines gather their listings in radically different ways.

Crawler-based search engines are the likes of Google, they create their listings automatically "crawling" the web (with a term called spiders), then people search through what they have found.

Changes made to your web pages are found by crawler-based search engines eventually, and that can affect how you are listed. Page titles, body copy and other elements all play a role.

Meanwhile, a human-powered directory as it is aptly named depends on humans for its listings. Once a submission of a short description is made to the directory for an entire site, a search will look for matches only in the descriptions submitted.

Changes made to your web pages has no effect on your listing. Things that are useful for improving a listing with a search engine have nothing to do with improving a listing in a directory. The only exception is that a good site, with good content, might be more likely to get reviewed for free than a poor site.

There are three major elements that a crawler based search engine possess. First is the spider, also called the crawler. The spider visits a web page, reads it, and then follows links to other pages within the site." Every now and then the spider returns to the pages to find changes. This brings us to the second part, the changes found by the spider goes into the index. The index, sometimes called the catalog contains a copy of every web page that the spider finds. If a web page changes, then this book is updated with new information.

Sometimes it can take a while for new pages or changes that the spider finds to be added to the index. Thus, a web page may have been "spidered" but not yet "indexed." Until it is indexed -- added to the index -- it is not available to those searching with the search engine.

When you perform a search by typing a word, a series of words, a phrase etc, a program does the work of sifting through the millions of pages recorded in the index to find matches to your search and rank them in order of what it believes is most relevant. This makes the third part of a search engine called the search engine software.

SEO is key in getting the best from Internet Marketing. The phrases and words that people use or enter into a search engine provides relevant information of common terms and words being used by everyone. These Keywords are essential in one’s approach toward SEO.
